Career Advancement Programmes (CAPs) are increasingly significant in the trauma recovery of refugee youth in the UK. The challenges faced by young refugees are multifaceted, encompassing displacement, loss, and cultural adjustment, often leading to mental health issues impacting their future prospects. Employability skills training within CAPs is crucial. According to the UNHCR, over 100,000 refugees arrived in the UK in 2022, a large proportion being young people. Many lack access to education and job opportunities, creating a vicious cycle of unemployment and social exclusion. CAPs offer a vital intervention, equipping these young people with the necessary skills and confidence to integrate into the UK workforce.
A well-structured CAP should address both immediate needs, such as language acquisition and basic employability skills, and longer-term aspirations, such as higher education or entrepreneurship. The current skills gap in various sectors, including healthcare and technology, presents opportunities for refugee youth, provided they receive appropriate training and support.
